LAP BAND SURGERY: WHAT IS IT?

The surgery is named after the silicone band that is inflatable. It is called the ‘lap band’.

MOST POPULAR OBESITY CONTROLLING METHOD IN USA

Lap band surgery is the most popular means to reduce obesity in the USA. Between 2001 and 2004, altogether 925 patients underwent this operation.

Within a year, the patients that were followed up reported a loss of 43 per cent of their extra weight.

Among them only 30 complained of blockages following the surgery.

LAP BAND SURGERY & DIABETES

Lap band surgery leaves a balmy effect on the stomach by reducing the flow of acid into it.

Lap band surgery also leaves positive effects on the blood pressure.

Lap band operation even reduces diabetes.

There are also instances where a patient has been able to totally resolve diabetes.

LAP BAND SURGERY: TWO-FOLD OBJECTIVE

The lap band surgery works with a two-fold objective, viz.,

(i) Reduction of the pace of the emptying process of food into the stomach as well as the intestine; and

(ii) Containing the quantity of food that a patient consumes.

WHY LAP BAND IS THE BEST AMONG OBESITY SURGERIES?

Among the surgeries, lap band is the best one among the available ones today.

There are four main reasons:

* It is economical (just about one-third of the cost of conventional bypass surgery of the stomach.

* Secondly, the process is reversible;

* Thirdly, the lap band operation can be carried out on an outpatient basis;

* Fourthly, lap band surgery has little risk of developing complications in the post-operation phase.

* Post-operative liposuction complications are avoidable.

* Skin discolorations and bruising disappear within 15 days of the liposuction operation.
