OBESITY: BANE OF MODERN-DAY LIFESTYLE

Obesity mirrors the so-called ‘modern-day’ life exhibiting typical characteristics. Mention may be made of the over-fast lifestyle.

It is marked by hectic professional schedule and tensions; sedentary way of life and a total lack of physical exercise.

Very few have the time to think even of their near-and dear ones.

Weekends are also transformed into official tours or formal get-togethers. These are simply occasions for increasing the calorie-content of the body what with all types of fried food and alcohol flowing free!

TRANSFORM THE DINNING TABLE INTO A WHOLESOME AFFAIR

Diet has become secondary, while time and target-meeting is now the determining factor. Filial emotions or relationships have assumed a rear seat.

The parents being professionals cannot afford to have breakfast, lunch and also supper with the family members.

Actually, the dinning table at meal time is actually the moment during 24 hours that the family members see each other’s face, congregate, discuss, and finalize the future plans.

This time is the determining factor for the kids of the house.

All these have taken their toll on the modern-day population – both urban as well as rural.

OBESITY NEEDS TO BE WITHIN HEALTH INSURANCE AMBIT

Another hurdle is the reluctance of the health insurance companies to cover obesity surgery within its ambit.

This is despite the fact that obesity treatment surgeries significantly cuts down the health care costs.

This is particularly with reference to the countries where health insurance is a major area of focus.

THE TYPICAL INDIAN SYNDROME

In India, misconceptions and wrong ideas about obesity have made the task all the more challenging.

Interestingly enough, many do not accept obesity as a disease. Fat people are looked upon as symbols of prosperity!

Under such circumstances, the need is there for the parents to be convinced that obesity in kids would spell disaster for their future life; and also that weight must be monitored and kept within the safe parameters.
